This gangster is really 'shiny'ing !!

A few days ago, I heard about the movie "Gangster" on a TV show. The anchor, there, claimed to be reviewing movies one after the other. The usual bollywood bashing was going on for the movies of the likes of Pyare Mohan. Since, I had not seen a hindi movie or TV for a long time, I decided to watch the idiot box in the synonymous fashion. Suddenly, it appeared to me that the usual bashing style of the reviewer changed to some smiles and he was actually applauding (OK.. appreciating) and the movie was Gangster. Yet Another Bhatt-Hashmi Camp movie, I thought with a slight rejection for the prospect of the movie.

Some of other friends also told me that the Gangster is a good one-time-watch but I was still not convinced though it certainly helped to go make a plan for the movie. On the weekend, when most of the software engineers in Bangalore do nothing but plan for a movie and finally somehow watch it; even I bought tickets for the movie Gangster. A couple of them actually; didn't want to take the risk alone!!

The movie started with quite a scene where the heroine kills a person (u guessed it right the hero!!) and in the process gets shot as well. But, there is a catch; there are two heroes in the movie and which one she kills is not made clear until the end. From here on, the story goes on in a flashback with Emran Hashmi and the new sexy/sultry yet sophisticated-looking heroine, oozing a lot of oomph, gave a few steamy scenes and in the background, some real catchy numbers played. My friend and I thought of it as the value for money spent and would have found the rest of movie a bonus if there is something worth calling so.

Till now, our other hero had not even made an entry onto the screen. Well, he comes, atypical of bollywood, enters the scene when Hashmi is at the peak of his "talent-show" for which he is called the "Serial Kisser" of bollywood. That was the first time I saw the hero, the real hero of the movie, Shiny Ahuja, as he is called, and was really bowled over by the way he carried himself on the screen. An actor, with no big-name attached to him and showed so much promise, was really a long-awaited thing to happen in bollywood. For quite a while, I could just be more and more impressed with the pleasant surprise package of Shiny Ahuja in the movie.

Though the character played by Shiny Ahuja is relatively quiet in the story but he speaks a lot with his eyes, body and air around him. The screen presence of his is truly a treat to the eyes with a face cut to compete with some of the better hollywood stars and a well-matching body. His role in the movie could be summarized into three very powerful scenes. First being the one when he discovers his beloved failing his love into the arms of Hashmi-played character; where, he carries raw passion in his eyes, a perfect blend of anger, betrayal and outrage. Lack of dialogues couldn't but make this scene even more intense and Shiny outshines the other two actors quite convincingly.

The next touching scene in the later part of the film shows Shiny's character's transformation from bad guy to good guy, from gangster to hardworking-man. It's not that it is shown for the first time in hindi movies but the way Shiny carries the role of this translation is what brings out of him that talented actor. While the Shiny's character undergoes this change, the best song of the movie is played in the background score, called "Bheegi Bheegi si.. ". It is composed/performed by a bangladeshi band and man they are a big talent in the reckoning too. Kudos to them for such a beautiful track!!

Story moves at a rapid pace from thereon and the defining scene of the movie is carried extremely well by both Shiny and the heroine Kangana. This is the scene where the punchline of the movie "She fell in love with him the day she betrayed him" is justified. The way Shiny comes out with one of the most intense scenes in recent indian cinema is truly remarkable and will make this movie memorable as well. I was impressed the way Shiny crawls to Kangna with his wounds even though he knows she has betrayed him. Hats off to the actor once again.

This guy is to go a long way in the industry and is one of the few actors who achieve something on their own, with their own talent. As per the movie, it is a good-to-watch with something to applaud for ... today's rising and tomorrow's 'shiny'ing star.
